When I was a barista I talked to everyone (imagine that!) So I commented on these tiger checks a woman, Bonnie, was using to pay for her mocha. I told her my sister loved big cats and Bonnie just grinned at me and walked away.
She became a regular and one day out of the blue she told me she ran a big cat rescue just outside the city, but she hesitates to tell people because people are stupid and don’t understand that the were born captive for various reasons and cannot be released into the wild because they were never there to begin with!!
I need to go back and see her but last time I was there she has 3 tigers (m & 2f), 2 lions (m&f), 4 cougars, and several bobcats.
the problem was with the population of stray house cats that were attracted to the ranch. they would get into the cages and of course be killed, but the scary part is how many diseases house/stray cats carry anyways and if the tigers ate one of the pests it was potentially fatal.
so they had to kill most of the strays. those are so cat people I can relate to.
